The pilot action aims to develop a Cross-border Renewable Energy Community at the Spanish – Portuguese border.
The pilot action aims to strengthen and expand EfiDuero Energy as a cross‑border community energy model that delivers socioeconomic, environmental and social benefits across the Duero–Douro region. Its core objective is to mobilise and engage local stakeholders sucha as businesses, citizens and vulnerable households, by raising awareness on the advantages of a cooperative and cross‑border approach to energy for a just energy transition in rural border areas.
Context
EfiDuero Energy is a pioneering European cross‑border energy cooperative created in 2017 in the Duero‑Douro region. Formed by the Duero‑Douro EGTC and 26 Spanish and Portuguese local public entities, mainly small rural municipalities, it is the first energy cooperative established under the European Cooperative Society (SCE) legal framework. EfiDuero provides an innovative governance model for jointly addressing cross‑border energy challenges.
Planned activities
- Cross-border business workshops to inform SMEs and entrepreneurs about the benefits of joining a cross-border energy community, opportunities for renewable energy deployment and collective energy procurement.
- School-based awareness actions to introduce students to energy efficiency and renewable energy.
- Community engagement campaigns to support broader public awareness, ensuring residents understand the environmental and social benefits of a cross-border energy community.
- Creation of a cross-border Living Lab to involve motivated citizens on practical energy transition topics and co-designed solutions, empowering them as local ambassadors of the Q-CBEC.
